A vastly experienced Hauptfeldwebel of Erste Kompanie surveys the ground beyond his men's defensive position. He would provide his men with a much needed steadying influence, particularly with the impending Soviet assault into their homeland. |

A Funker of the HQ Gruppe looks through his well-used binoculars. A married man, his thoughts about his family's future would in all probability take second place to the ever-present one of survival. |

Another veteran of the last eighteen months of almost continual fighting. His Erkennungsmarke, giving details of his training unit and blood group, can clearly be seen in its pouch suspended around his neck with string. |

Füsilieren continue to work on their defensive positions. However, with GD's impending counter attack, there may not be too much more effort required here. |

In conjunction with the previous photograph, this Füsilier welcomes a cigarette break which, would suggest that the Soviet advance is far enough away to warrant such a "relaxed" atmosphere. |

A Leutnant scans the ground that he and his men will soon be expected to traverse. As per his standing, he has procured some more fashionable and comfortable items of clothing, such as the wrap-over tunic and HBT Panzer over trousers. This is in contrast to his men's basic woollen uniforms. He is also the proud owner of the new Sturmgewehr 44, a late attempt by the Germans to try and redress the advantage the allies held in semi-automated small arms. |

A Gefreiter buttons his tunic. Displaying the Ostfront medal ribbon award, this is another seasoned campaigner who could be relied upon by his Gruppenführer. Another photograph inspired by God, Honour, Fatherland with a multitude of items surrounding him, including cartridge boxes, ammo cans and a case containing the optical sights for the MG42 when used in a sustained fire role. |

Clearly there is enemy activity as these men are "standing to", loading their rifles and adjusting the elevation of the MG42 with the aforementioned optical sights clearly visible. |

The enemy activity must have contained an element of surprise as the Füsilier visible in the foreground was hoping to enjoy his prized apple. The experience of these men is shown by the ready supply of Stielhandgranaten in their open carrier. |
