This Gefreiter takes advantage of the lull before the counter attack to make contact with Kompanie HQ. Communication became increasingly difficult in the latter stages of the war, so every opportunity to gain clarity over a situation was taken. |

Following his contact with Kompanie HQ, the Gefreiter settles down for a cultural game of chess, while a fresh young replacement looks on. Even at rest though, the accoutrements of war are never far away, in this instance a MP40. |

The "young hare" clearly incurred his Gruppenführer's sense of humour. Instead of impressing a young lady from home, he now impresses his kameraden by field stripping the MG42. |
