The Großdeutschland in Colour by Rory Andrews.

After looking at grey-scale (black and white) images of various Grossdeutschland units from different periods of the war I decided that they would look far better with a hint of colour and, by doing this I felt that I was bringing back to life a small piece of history.

I had heard of colouring grey-scale images before but assumed, in my ignorance, that it was something far beyond my level of computing. However after looking deeper into it I discovered that there are programs designed to assist in the colouring of images.

I went for a program called ‘Recolored’ and began working on the images pictured.

Each colour must be hand selected and then applied; this does pose a problem as with each different image the lighting was different and thus meaning that a different colour (even for the same uniform) was needed. Also grass and foliage had to be coloured blade by blade, pixel by pixel (and I'm not dramatising).
